Why this song today: Monday’s report covers the No. 1 song on the Hot 100. That song, Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero,” already has a report here. So do No. 2, Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” (credits report), No. 3, Stella Lefty’s “Boston” (credits report), No. 4, Morgan Wallen’s “Been By Now” (credits report) and No. 5, Drake & Don Toliver’s “Solar Eclipse” (credits report). This report moves to the next-highest song not yet covered: “Dracula” by Tame Impala & JENNIE, at No. 6.

What the credits show

Bar chart of SoundExchange's digital radio royalty split: 50% to the master owner, usually the label; 45% to the featured artist; 5% to non-featured players and singers, paid through the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund. A note says songwriters and publishers are paid separately through their PRO and The MLC.

This is close to a one-man record. Kevin Parker is Tame Impala, and the credits name him as writer, producer, recording engineer and lead voice. The remix opened the room a little: JENNIE and Carly Gibert joined Parker and Sarah Aarons on the writing credit, and outside engineers are reported on the mix and master. The master (the recording) is held by Columbia under an exclusive license from Tame Impala. That wording points to Parker’s side keeping the recording and licensing it to Columbia, under terms that are not public. The publishing (the song) is now split four ways. Each writer is paid performance royalties through a PRO and mechanicals through The MLC, in shares that are not public. On digital radio (SiriusXM, internet radio), SoundExchange pays 50% to the master owner, 45% to the featured artists, and 5% to non-featured players and singers through the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund. With Parker playing the parts himself and no session players named, that 5% may have few or no names to go to.

Left unconfirmed

ISRC, ISWC, publishers, each writer’s PRO, writer splits, the exact distribution entity, and session players. The additional production, mixing and mastering credits are reported but not yet on an official page checked.
